Indigenous plants
The slopes of Eagles Nest, with their abundant vegetation, form part of the richest of the world's six floral kingdoms.
The natural vegetation of the area (Fynbos) is made up of over 8000 species of plants, of which 5000 do not occur anywhere else in the world. The most well known of these species is the Protea, South Africa's national flower.
As a rich natural habitat for birds and insects, the fynbos (and re-established Silverleaf trees) found on Eagles' Nest are an invaluable asset.
In appreciation of this asset, an extensive fynbos regeneration project was recently embarked on to restore the slopes to their natural glory. As part of this project, 15 000 Silver Leaf trees, Proteas, Ericas and other species were planted and are being carefully observed.
