Eagles’ Nest Soars in the 2024 Prescient Sauvignon Blanc Report!
August 30, 2024Its rich aromas of ripe red fruit, spice, and a touch of smoke, and its velvety texture on the palate, is indeed a true masterpiece.
Renowned wine connoisseur and expert, Tim Atkin, has compiled his twelfth and longest report for 2024, published on Tim Atkin.com. Atkin is known for giving an in-depth analysis of the current South African wine scene. To compile the report, he tasted 2,259 wines from 427 different producers, spending over a month in the Cape in March, June and July this year.
The good news is that the Eagles’ Nest Shiraz Reserve 2022, received an impressive 95 points - Tim Atkin’s equivalent of a gold medal!
Atkin himself noted “No one could be happier than I am to see this Constantia Syrah back at the top of its game. Floral, savoury and intense, it’s a brilliant cool climate red with a granitic accent, lovely focus and depth, 5% whole bunches, bramble, blackberry and fynbos notes and a mineral core. The 30% new wood is beautifully handled.
More Wines Shine in the Spotlight
In addition to the Shiraz Reserve’s top rating, a number of our other prestigious wines were acknowledged, in the Tim Atkin report. The Eagles' Nest Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2023, was awarded an impressive 92 points. Atkin said “The new broom under owner Christian Elleke and winemaker Craig Barnard seems to be tidying things up nicely. This is a tangy, lightly wooded Constantia Sauvignon Blanc, made in a reductive style. Stony, pithy and sweetly oaked, it has a touch of cream, some vanilla spice and a focused gooseberry and grapefruit palate.”
The Eagles' Nest Viognier Reserve 2022, earned 91 points, celebrated for its fresh, ripe yellow fruit, complemented by subtle citrus notes of lemon and lime. “Less fat, broad and oaky than it used to be, this is another white that is benefitting from Eagles’ Nest’s new direction. Fermented in 10% new oak, it has subtle ginger and apricot flavours, a hint of beeswax and more acidity and zip than most examples of the variety.”
Why Choose Wines from the Constantia Valley
The Cape Vineyards are rich in natural beauty. The Constantia Estate region specifically, oozes with character and legacy. Constantia is nestled at the foot of the Constantiaberg mountain to the east, about 15 kilometres south of Cape Town. Some of the vineyards in the region are truly unique, making it a popular choice for esteemed visitors. Eagles’ Nest is one of them, situated in the heart of the Constantia Valley Winelands, having some of the steepest vineyards in South Africa, reaching heights from 100m to 400m above sea level. Hints of cool ocean breeze from False Bay sweep the terrain, adding to the quality of our vines and the distinct character of our wines. It's the reason we’re regarded as one of the best vineyards and wine producers in the region, and our Shiraz Reserve is a true reflection of this.
