This impressive magnum bottle holds a Shiraz that embodies the cool climate character of the Constantia region. The wine boasts a bright red colour and a nose dominated by the peppery tones that are a hallmark of Eagles’ Nest Shiraz. These are complemented by perfume and ripe red fruit aromas, with mineral and earthy notes developing in the glass. Savoury, smoky notes add further complexity.

Following the source material, the palate of this magnum offers a delightful concentration of flavours. Pepper, spice, and delicious red fruit remain the driving force, supported by soft, integrated tannins and a full, structured mid-palate. Our 2020 Eagles’ Nest Constantia Reserve Merlot is a testament to meticulous winemaking and the diverse terroir of Eagles’ Nest. The grapes for this Merlot are sourced from eight different blocks situated on north-easterly to north-westerly slopes, ranging from 100m to 400m above sea level. These variations in altitude and microclimate contribute to the wine’s complexity.

Multiple small batches were hand-picked, cooled down, and processed individually to capture the unique nuances of each vineyard block. After fermentation, the components were aged in first, second, and third-fill French oak barrels from six different cooperages. This meticulous selection ensures the oak complements the character of the wine, not overpowers it.

Following 18 months of maturation, select barrels were blended to create a final wine brimming with complexity and layers of flavour.

3. 2020 Eagles’ Nest Constantia Reserve Shiraz: A Celebration of Place

Similar to the Merlot, the 2020 Eagles’ Nest Constantia Reserve Shiraz reflects the unique terroir of the estate. Eleven blocks, planted on slopes ranging from east to north-west and reaching 100m to 400m in altitude, contribute to this complex Shiraz.

Just like with the Merlot, the grapes were hand-picked and processed in small batches based on individual vineyard characteristics. Fermentation took place in open-top fermenters, with pump-overs performed for optimal extraction. Following fermentation, the wine aged in French oak barrels, with 35% being new oak.

After 18 months of maturation, select components were blended to create a final wine that expresses the full potential of the Shiraz grape grown in the cool climate of Constantia.
